Job Description:   Driver/Sales Workers are truck drivers who have sales and customer service responsibilities. Sometimes called "Route Drivers," they make regularly scheduled deliveries of fast-moving or perishable products to businesses and stores. These products range from grocery products such as milk, bakery items, snack food, and beverages to industrial garments and vending machine items. Customers may include grocery stores, hospitals, hotels, and restaurant. Job duties vary with the product, customer, and company policies. Typically drivers keep track of their customers' stock, maintaining predetermined levels, rotate stock on the shelves, replace outdated or damaged items, and bring in new stock from the truck. They arrange merchandise on racks and shelves and set up promotional displays, maintain records or deliveries and charges, and may collect money.

Basic Job Requirements:

  1. California Drivers License
  2. Pass all appropriate licensing and medical exams
  3. Good driving record
  4. At least 18 to 21 years of age
  5. Good physical condition with normal use of arms and legs
  6. Pleasant and outgoing personality
  7. Neat, well-groomed appearance
  8. Sales ability and initiative
  9. High school graduate or equivalent
  10. Knowledge of basic business math
  11. Legible handwriting

 Where to get training locally:   There are few if any training providers for this specific occupation. Places to go to get training in the needed skills of driver and salesperson include: High school and other driver training providers, Regional Occupation Program (ROP) providers, business colleges, and community colleges. Employers usually provide brief driver training in the form of instruction from an experienced driver. They also usually give one to two days classroom instruction on general duties, the operation and loading of a truck, company policies, the preparation of delivery forms, company record-keeping methods, and company products and merchandise.
