Job Description:   Carpenters work in all types of construction. Carpenters may build homes by erecting framework, walls, and roofs and installing doors, windows, flooring, and paneling. They may specialize in one phase of construction such as framing roofs or installing cabinets. Carpenters may work for specialized contractors and install hardwood flooring or erect scaffolding. Some contractors work on major highway projects, office buildings, boats, and manufacturing plants. They may cut and shape wood, plastics, tiles, fiberglass and other materials using hand tools and a variety of power tools and equipment.

Basic Job Requirements:

  1. High school graduate is preferred
  2. Completion of shop courses, mechanical drawing, and general mathematics
  3. Good manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and physical fitness
  4. Ability to solve arithmetic problems desirable

 Where to get training locally:   High schools, vocational schools, local Joint Apprenticeship Council, and the local Carpenters Union. Some carpenters obtain training through employer programs or on-the-job.

 Possible Job Paths:
 Carpenters can move up to Estimator, Carpenter Supervisor, or Construction Superintendent.
