Job Description: Cabinetmakers and Bench Carpenters are skilled workers who cut, shape, put together, repair, alter, and install wooden items, such as store shelves and racks, office equipment, cabinets, and high quality furniture. They set up and work a number of machines, such as power saws, jointers, mortisers, tenoners, molders, and shapers, to cut and shape parts from wood stock. In addition to different kinds of wood, they may use masonite, formica, and vinyl surfacing materials.

Where to get training locally: The Cabinetmaker apprenticeship program takes about four years to complete and includes job experience and night classes at adult vocational and education centers or community colleges. In addition, there are certificate and Associate of Arts degree programs in Millwork and Cabinetmaking at Fresno, San Joaquin Delta, San Diego City, and Sierra Community Colleges.
