Job Description:   Psychiatric Aides work under the supervision of psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses and social workers to provide nursing and personal care to mentally disabled patients in State or private hospitals or private nursing facilities. The most common tasks include the following: assisting patients with bathing, dressing or feeding; encouraging patients to participate in educational and recreational activities; recording patient blood pressure, pulse and temperature; and aiding or restraining patients to prevent injuries. Psychiatric Aides report any health or behavior changes to the supervising medical staff.

  5. Nursing Assistant Certification issued by the Department of Health Services is preferred

 Where to get training locally:   Generally, training is offered on-the-job. Community colleges, vocational and adult education schools, and local training providers offer state approved nursing assistant training programs.

 Possible Job Paths:
 Psychiatric aides can move up to Licensed Vocational Nurse, Nurse Aide, Human Services Worker, Psychiatric Technician, Registered Nurse, or Medical Assistant.
