Job Description:   Medical Assistants work in offices of doctors, dentists, optometrists, and all types of medical clinics and facilities. Medical Assistant perform a variety of tasks such as assisting physicians in treating patients, taking patient medical histories, preparing patients for examinations, arranging and caring for instruments and equipment in examination room, completing and maintaining patient records, scheduling appointments, and arranging for hospital admissions.

Wages - Statewide:  

To give you an idea of how much you might earn, we have given you the average hourly wages and average yearly wages for this career throughout California. Wages can vary greatly in different parts of the State.

Basic Job Requirements:

  1. High school graduate or equivalent desirable
  2. Good health
  3. Good appearance and grooming
  4. Good verbal skills
  5. Pleasant and courteous personality
  6. English/Spanish speaking skills preferred by many California employers
  7. Certification by American Association of Medical Assistants desirable

 Where to get training locally:   High schools, community colleges and vocational schools for specialized programs. Should have high school courses in math, biology, office practices, typing, and computers.

 Possible Job Paths:
 Medical Assitants can move up to Office Manager, Medical Assisting Instructor, Medical or Clinical Lab Technician, or Licensed Vocational Nurse.
