Shipping and Receiving Clerks

Job Description:   Shipping and Receiving Clerks keep track of all goods and merchandise transferred between business establishments. Shipping Clerks are responsible for all outgoing shipments. They assure that merchandise is in proper condition and that orders are filled properly before the items are sent to customers. Receiving Clerks unwrap and unpack goods received and ensure that the orders are filled correctly by checking the items received against the original orders. Both Shipping and Receiving Clerks may operate hand trucks, forklifts, tow trucks, cranes, pickup trucks, mailing machines, and loading conveyers.

Basic Job Requirements:

  1. Good memory
  2. Good spelling and writing skills
  3. High school graduate with courses in typing, business arithmetic, and other business courses preferred
  4. Clerical experience and ability to operate office machines desirable

 Where to get training locally:   Most training is on-the-job. Basic clerical and business courses can be completed in high school, adult education, community colleges, and private vocational schools.

 Possible Job Paths:
 Shipping and Receiving Clerks can move up to Traffic Rate Clerk, Head Clerk, Shipping and Receiving Supervisor, Warehouse Manager, Buyer, Purchasing Agent, or Traffic Manager.
